The White Crane and the Moon Moth
The moon is shining,
Its light so bright.
She so perfect,
Her feathers of white.
Swimming towards death,
A fish to waters bond.
Ripple of light across the water,
A turtle in the pond.
Her beak, long and black,
Piercing the soft skin of fish.
Her sleek red head.
She a crane, a perfect wish.
A flutter of soft silk wings,
The moon moth floats in the air.
A whisper on the wind,
To the water does it dare?
Taking the first breath of life,
A newborn fawn in the forest.
Squirrels chirp in the trees,
Birds sing their undying chorus.
A call rings out,
She looks up into the darkness of night.
Her eyes catch the quiver,
Of a moth in flight.
The stars of light,
Against the moon.
A time again,
The call of the loon.
Now on the bank,
In the soft lush grass,
She lays three eggs,
To her, here at last.
A smell in the air,
A movement in the trees.
Today there is joy,
But she also grieves.
Today she knows,
Something not known to others.
A heavy weight of decision,
Is upon her shoulders.
She must leave them,
For it’s her time to go.
Not to the south, or the north, or the east,
But to a place unknown.
She must fly there to a place to where none come back.
Through the soul of her destiny to a place of peace.
She flies through darkness, light and nothing,
She thinks of her young and the future weeks
She has left them behind for the sake of her own,
But she can not survive.
She regrets her decision even though there was no choice,
To them she has given her life.
Still on the bank,
In the soft lush grass,
Where she has laid her eggs,
She breathes her last…..
