Past Tense
Wind swoops across the yard
And skims the sunshine
Slowing to a glow through bleached sheets
Fluttering like fire
The color of young bones
Writhing and roiling above the
Long
June
Grass
And here
Between these living walls
The sky is my roof
The kind of blue that sees
The whole in the half
With every quarter turn of your blood
And I cannot help but thinking
Of how I long to be the child
That I can never be again
Lost and safe in the world
Again
When time meant nothing
When my skin was not a map of memories
That my sons will never know by name
Secrets
Like ghosts
Swimming the periphery of their father’s flesh
A time when you felt everything for the first time
When nothing left you undone
Nothing left you empty
And nothing left you wanting more
