Almost There
I looked straight up
And could just barely make out a glimpse
Of the sun through the trees
Peeking out
Like it was afraid to be found
I started climbing
Branch by branch
My heart pounded as if a giant
Was coming to get me
I Climbed up
And up
To the very top
I had to catch a glimpse
Even the tiniest
Peak of the sun
I kept climbing
Faster and faster
The branches
As rough as sandpaper
Scraping against my skin
But I didn’t care
All the cuts
And blood
They didn’t bother me
I had to get to the top
More rapidly
I leaped up to the last branch
Pulled my body on top
Of that thick brown limb
And as I peaked through
The leaves and twigs
I saw
The sun
I felt a rush of excitement
Contentment
Peace
And joy
As I had finally reached
The top
