Eau Claire, WI - The Eau Claire Curling Club and Volume One have teamed up to launch a brand new "starter" curling league - featuring a shorter 8-week season, a lower cost, and including everything a newbie would need to get going and give it a try. It all starts this January with a series of free "curling lesson" nights so people can see what curling is all about. Experienced curlers will be on hand to show people the ropes through the lessons and for much of the league nights. So what's the deal with curling? You know, it's that weird ice-based game where people push a heavy stone toward a huge target (painted right in the ice) while a couple of their team mates emphatically "sweep" the ice directly in front of the stone as it (hopefully) makes its way to the center of said target. It's a cold weather sport on ice, but it's inside a building where the elements are always cooperative and the ice conditions are perfect. You don't have to be a "real" athlete, you can drink a beer (or hot chocolate) while you play, and it's a sport that focuses a lot on community and camaraderie. What's not to love?
