Chippewa Falls sand plant hits financial snag

Mike Paulus |

While the downtown jail project has been debated by the people of Eau Claire over the past few years (and by “people of Eau Claire,” I mean "the petite fraction of the population that is actually aware the we have a downtown area"), the good people of Chippewa Falls have been debating their own land/constriction issue: the controversial Canadian Sand and Proppants project. Read all about it here.

The sizable and vocal group of Chippewa citizens that’s been battling the proposed $50 million silica sand processing plant caught a teeny, tiny break yesterday when Canadian Sand and Proppants announced delays in their plans because, in technical terms, they ain’t got enough money. Or at the very least, CSP says they can’t invest in the plant just yet because demand for their product is low right now. But they’re simply in a holding pattern, and eventually, they’ll be moving ahead.

OK, we need to start talking about the Eau Claire county courthouse and jail again (because it’s the law). The only interesting news right now is that the city of Altoona, our nice next door neighbor to the east, is hinting about some open land they have that maybe the county might want to come over and look at maybe, no pressure, it’s just a suggestion maybe, nice weather we’re having, huh? The L-T says Altoona city officials would like to talk to the county about its (kind of stalled) River Prairie development as a possible jail location. But it would involve moving the county seat – which is pretty rare.
