Local Musicians Pick Six (Part 2)

Mike Paulus |

Here's another installment of "having local musicians pick six music recommendations for no other reason than to know what they're listening to and maybe find some new music." This week, we've got a country singer, a hip-hop artist, and a metalhead. You can check out the first installment – featuring Jim Pullman, Sue Orfield, and Peter Phippen – right here.

Michael Perry,
Michael Perry and the Long Beds

Dino: The Essential Dean Martin (I just stand there in my snow boots and try to imagine what it’s like to operate at that magnitude of smooth.)

Cinderella, Heartbreak Station (One of their more acoustic endeavors, bonus points for dated reference to Tipper Gore.)

Gerry Rafferty, City to City (Introduced my daughters to his music during a recent road trip, and upon our return learned that he had died.)

Budapest One iTunes mix (Reminds me of Keith Killoren getting wild-eyed onstage at the Stone’s Throw.)

Boz Scaggs, Silk Degrees (Vinyl, on Grandma’s nicotine-soaked console stereo. Sounds a little wavy due to warpage.)

Julia Dollison (For a project I’m working on.)

Tyler Franz,
aka Breakneck the Mage

Carnage the Executioner, Worth The Wait (In my opinion, this is overall the most talented MC/beatboxer in the Midwest, and this long time Twin Cities hip hop legend and Fill In The Breaks Records just released this amazing album, aptly titled Worth the Wait.)

Mac Miller, K.I.D.S. Mixtape (Mac Miller is a nineteen year-old (Jewish-American) kid from Pittsburgh,PA who has made a huge name for himself with his incredibly well-done music videos (and lots of them) and the strength of this mixtape offering.)

Breakneck the Mage, Industry Beats vol.II (Because you asked me what I was listening to.)

Curren$y, Return To The Winners Circle (A long time veteran, the New Orleans native is back with another great mixtape that keeps consistent subject matter all the way through and has an old school vibe.)

St. Paul Slim (Currently my favorite Twin Cities rapper.)

Blinded (Currently my favorite Chippewa Valley rapper.)

Brent K,
Desolatevoid

EyeHateGod (Desolatevoid has decided to throw in some covers to our sets for fun. Since we consider EyeHateGod big influence, this song was an easy choice.)

Agalloch, Marrow of the Spirit (Every winter along comes an epic metal album that captures the essence of a harsh winter. Typically, it’s a European band that accomplishes this, but this season I think that Oregon's Agalloch gets the the frozen crown. Imagine if members of Emperor, God Speed You Black Emperor, and Neurosis got together for a side project. Another surprise for me with this band is that I'd never expect NPR to pay attention to metal  ...)

The Greenhornes, **** (I've always felt that your surroundings come out in your music. I'm convinced that there is something in the waters of Ohio that causes people to make awesome garage rock bands. When I first heard the 60's era Who stylings of "Saying Good Bye" [video] it took me back to the first time I heard Guided By Voices "Motor Away.")

Best Coast, When I'm with You (This video features three things I haven't enjoyed in a while: Sun, Surf rock, and In-N-Out Burger.)

Crowbar, The Cemetery Angels (... from the soon to be released album Sever The Wicked Hand. It’s been years since Crowbar has released anything so I am looking for forward to this.)

SunnO))), The Grimm Robe Demos (This is still one of my favorite chill out albums. Low tuned Les Pauls played through loud fuzzed out amps = soothing and heavy. Video.)
