Enjoy 'Sounds From The Theatre' With The Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra
Sunday, Nov. 22 program includes "Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Overture to Coriolan" and more
The Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra (ECCO) invites listeners to the theatre – “Sounds from the Theatre,” that is. The show, directed by Matthew Poon, is inspired by the theatre stage and will begin at 2:30pm on Sunday, Nov. 22 at Grace Lutheran Church (202 W. Grand Ave., Eau Claire). Pre-concert activities will be offered at 2pm.
The program will begin with “Concerto for Bassoon” by Nino Rota – best known for his scores in cult classic film “The Godfather” – and include featured soloist, bassoonist Alex Widstrand. This concerto features various dances or dance-like forms, including the waltz, polka, siciliana, scherzo, sarabande and gallop.
Mozart Beethoven’s “Overture to Coriolan” dramatizes the story of a Roman general named Coriolanus, who ultimately takes his own life when faced with two conflicting choices.
Gioachino Rossini’s “The Silken Ladder,” one of his earlier operas, will tell the story of marital unfaithfulness and under-the-table lovemaking.
Joseph Haydn’s “Symphony No. 26 in D minor,” also known as “Lamentatione,” will follow as it features passionate, plainsong lament themes.
Felix Mendelssohn’s “Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream Op.21” will draw the audience into the supernatural world of the dream state as it closes the program. Much of these themes were experienced in William Shakespeare’s play of the same name.
This instrumental piece is known as the only entertainment the Church allowed during Lent, as singing and performing were forbidden.
Tickets to the Eau Claire Chamber Orchestra's Nov. 22 show are $30/person and must be purchased at the door using a check or credit card • Free for students and those under 21 • For more information, visit eauclairechamberorchestra.com and keep up with the ECCO on Facebook
