“Returning“ by Kayla Thao

Kayla Thao is an artist and graphic designer currently studying at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where she is pursuing a career in graphic design and illustration/painting. Her creative work is rooted in the exploration of vibrant, bright colors that bring energy and emotion to each piece. Nature remains a central source of inspiration throughout her art, while her experience growing up as a Hmong American woman also serves as an important influence in her creative process.

“Returning” (2024) • 6" x 9" • Gouache paint • About the artwork, from the artist: “ 'Returning' is a series of gouache paintings inspired by the impact of nature on human life. The name 'Returning' comes from the belief that humans come from nature, and thus must return back into nature once again. This series of paintings depicts a lush and wild environment that intertwine the remnants of humans into the overwhelmingly large impact of nature, encapsulating the feeling of peace and serenity as life begins and ends.”
