As Wisconsinites gear up for the 2026 Spring Election, which includes the closely-watched state Supreme Court race, Chippewa Vallians can expect to vote on a number of school board, county board, and city council seats (including the Eau Claire City Council President race). Before then, though, some locals have the rare opportunity to apply for an Eau Claire City Council seat.
District 2 councilperson Emily Anderson announced her resignation a week ago, stating “a need to focus on other professional and personal responsibilities.”
“It has been an honor to serve the people of Eau Claire over the last eight years and to collaborate with dedicated City staff and Council colleagues,” Anderson shared with area media outlets and the City of Eau Claire.
“Many city governments in Wisconsin, including Eau Claire, are facing financial challenges largely due to the state choosing to keep an increasing portion of our tax revenue,” Anderson continued. “But despite this very real challenge, I encourage anyone who wants to feel hopeful about the state of American democracy to get involved in our local government, where they will find shared decision-making, civility, transparency and a commitment to public service.”
In a unanimous vote, the city council moved to appoint an individual to the District 2 seat for the remainder of its term – through April 2027 – and is now accepting applications from residents.

“It seems to me that there is only one of these (resolution options) that makes a good amount of sense,” Aaron Brewster, Eau Claire City Council member for District 3 said at the March 10 legislative session. “Having a special election in the fall would mean that the person (elected) would serve for a few months before they would have to go into election mode again.
“That doesn't seem like the best use of our time, as well as leaving (the position) open,” he continued.
Qualified electors of District 2 who are interested, are encouraged to submit an application to the City Clerk's office via email or through USPS. The deadline to submit any interest inquiries will be on April 2, in which the office will review submissions and forward applicants to the Eau Claire City Council staff.
City Council shared that a vote will occur at the April 14 legislative session; the elected District 2 council member will officially join on the following Tuesday, April 21.
