Eau Claire native and author Ann Lowry will return to the Chippewa Valley in early June to discuss her debut novel, The Blue Trunk. The book – released in September 2024 – has collected several accolades since its publication, including recognition by The Eric Hoffer Book Award.

As both historical and women’s fiction, the novel focuses on the lives of a modern day
character, Rachel, juxtaposed with her long-lost ancestor, Marit. While The Blue Trunk's main character is not based on Lowry or her experiences, the character Marit is inspired by Lowry's own familial history.

In the novel, Marit is based on one Lowry's real-life ancestors by the same name; Lowry, inspired by a hand-painted cerulean antique trunk she found in her family home with the name "Marit Sletmo" on it, heavily researched her ancestor. Lowry's research led her to the conclusion, her ancestor likely spent much of her life at the former Eau Claire County Asylum, County Home, and County Poor Farm.

Since its release, Lowry has made a number of guest appearances at a variety of events and received coverage for The Blue Trunk by Wisconsin Public Radio, Writer's Digest, Kirkus Reviews, and more. The Blue Trunk is also a finalist for The Eric Hoffer Book Award in the debut novels category and is short-listed for the Eric Hoffer Grand Prize.

Kirkus Reviews gave The Blue Trunk a Blue Star rating, noting it “offers humor, sharp social commentary, startling twists, and a satisfying conclusion."

Ann Lowry will return to the area on Wednesday, June 4, at the Russell J. Rassbach Heritage Museum (1820 John Russell Rd., Menomonie) from 10-11:30am to give a book talk.
