Ellen Nelson realized her passion for fiber, fabric, and thread in grade school! After a career in the corporate world, and raising a family, she now continues to explore all fiber art.
“Dodo Dodgson” (2024) • 38” x 36” • Art quilt by Ellen Nelson • From the artist: “The dodo bird is significant in the Alice In Wonderland stories as written by Lewis Carroll, whose real name is Charles Dodgson. Dodgson stuttered. It is speculated that Dodgson included the dodo bird as himself because he had difficulty saying his last name! This art quilt is painted with fabric. Great care is taken to choose the specific fabric that is the appropriate color for the ‘painting.’ The fabric was then needle-turned appliqué by hand onto the background, and machine quilted, which further aided in blending the fabrics and colors while giving additional loft and texture to the quilt. Most of my creations have a touch of whimsey, in the subject matter or a small treasure to surprise the viewer.”
