GRAB YOUR GOGGLES: The Ask-A-Scientist Series is Back
bring your questions and appetite for learning to this rebooted science Q&A series
Have you ever wanted to know the answers to the weird science-y questions you ask yourself but don’t have any scientist friends? Here is the solution! The Ask-A-Scientist series from UW-Eau Claire has been revived and is better than ever.
Ask-A-Scientist is a monthly talk and extended Q&A with a scientific expert in an area of interest to the public. Organized by Matthew Jewell, a professor and department chair of the material science and biomedical engineering department, this series will showcase a variety of topics with different scientists every month.
Due to COVID and the retirement of longtime organizer Dr. Paul Thomas, the series had to push pause and went on hiatus for several years.
“We wanted to give a face-to-face opportunity for the public to ask their questions directly to the scientists that carry out the work that leads to scientific discovery and advancement,” Jewell says in regard to why the series was brought back.
There are a wide range of topics from the speakers including the physical and biological sciences, engineering, math, medicine, and the social sciences. “If there’s a scientist doing the work, we want to be able to share it at Ask-A-Scientist,” Jewell says.
“As misinformation is increasingly common, especially in online spaces, we wanted to give a face-to-face opportunity for the public to ask their questions directly to the scientists that carry out the work that leads to scientific discovery and advancement,” he adds.
This free event series is sponsored and hosted at 2 Roots Gallery, 216 S. Barstow St., Eau Claire. The next talk will be on Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 7pm with speaker Dr. Rahul Gomes, a computer science professor at UW-Eau Claire, who will be talking about artificial intelligence and its likely impact on healthcare, education, and other industries.
