Voting is a mighty important thing to do, but lack of transportation – whether because of age, ability, or simply not being able to afford a car, bus, or taxi – can make it hard for some folks to exercise their right to vote.

To help citizens in western Wisconsin have their voices heard on Election Day – Tuesday, Nov. 5 – JONAH, which covers Chippewa, Dunn, and Eau Claire counties, is partnering with Chippewa Valley Votes to remove barriers to voting by coordinating rides for local voters who need them. It’s a first-time effort for JONAH, the 17-year-old community group.

Transportation will be coordinated between now and Election Day for anyone who would like a ride or a voting companion for the following purposes: 1) getting a voter identification card at the Division of Motor Vehicles; 2) turning in an absentee ballot; 3) taking part in early drive-through voting, which in the City of Eau Claire occurs from 9am to 4pm Tuesday, Oct. 22, through Friday, Nov. 1; 4) getting a ride to the polls on Election Day; or 5) anything else someone may need related to voting. All needs will be considered, and JONAH will also cover the cost of free paratransit on Election Day. (In addition, the City of Eau Claire is offering free buses on Election Day.)

There are many reasons people may be unable to vote due to transportation restrictions: 1) they may not able to afford a car; 2) they may not drive due to a disability or personal reasons; 3) they may not know where to go; 4) they can’t figure out how to take a bus to their polling or other locations; 5) they may not be able to afford a taxi; 6) they may not speak English; or 7) they may be too anxious to go alone.

JONAH is seeking drivers who are willing to take people where they need to go and riders who has voting needs of any kind. Potential drivers should fill out the Google document linked here, while potential riders should follow this link.
