In the deep winter of January, the Pablo Center invites Eau Claire to head down to the Greek underworld. The smash-hit Broadway musical Hadestown will come to the Pablo Center Jan. 21-23, 2025. This eight-time Tony Award winning musical was written by Anais Mitchell, member of the folk supergroup Bonny Light Horseman.

Hadestown is a retelling of the ancient Greek legend of the tragedy of Orpheus and his doomed quest to recover his wife Eurydice from the Underworld.

Mitchell originally wrote and performed an early version of Hadestown in Vermont from 2006 to 2007. In 2010, she adapted it to a concept album produced by Righteous Babe Records, featuring performances by Ani DiFranco, Justin Vernon, and more. Hadestown would then go on to start its Broadway run in 2019, and although it was stymied by the COVID-19 pandemic, it was among the first musicals to return to the stage in 2021.

Hadestown has an ethereal, dream-like electricity to its performance, and the set design, music, and performances drip with a unique authenticity. Audiences don’t need to be intimately familiar with Greek myth to enjoy it, and although the ending of the story is well-known (and spoiled in the early moments of the musical), Hadestown has a richness that entreats the audience to find catharsis in its tragedy.
