Hey, I love Micon Cinemas’ comfy recliner seats and buttery popcorn as much as the next person (actually, it’s kind of an addiction – I'm a frequent $5 Tuesday flyer), but these seasonal movie series are only happening during our precious warm months. From Eau Claire to Altoona to Menomonie, here are some options to spice up your summer evenings.

UWEC Summer Cinema

Held at the campus mall on UW-Eau Claire’s campus, this annual series is free to attend and features yard games and free snacks, too. Grab some lawn blankets or lounge chairs and spread out – there’s plenty of room! In case of inclement weather, the events are moved to the Woodland Theater on Davies Center’s third floor.

Free • Activities begin at 8pm, films begin at 9pm • UW-Eau Claire Campus Mall

  • June 19 – Bedtime Stories
  • June 26 – West Side Story
  • July 10 – Free Guy
  • July 17 – Luca
  • July 24 – Air Bud
  • July 31 – The Goonies
  • Aug. 7 – Night at the Museum
  • Aug. 14 – Moana
  • Aug. 21 – The Parent Trap
  • Aug. 28 – Barbie

River Prairie Movie Nights

Perfect for the kiddos, head on over to River Prairie Park for this free family-friendly series. All movies will begin at sunset.

Free • 9pm • 1445 Front Porch Place, Altoona

  • July 8 – Encanto and The Goonies
  • July 22 – Soul
  • Aug. 5 – Raya & The Last Dragon
  • Aug. 19 – Clifford the Big Red Dog and Jungle Cruise

Mabel’s Movie Series

For some historic flair in a grand venue, The Mabel Tainter is hosting three flicks in its beautiful theater. Thanks to a large projector screen in the historic theater, enjoy any of these three favorites and enjoy popcorn with their old-fashioned popcorn maker. The Mabel’s speakeasy-style cocktail lounge, The Spirit Room, is downstairs to order beverages that can be taken into the theater.

$10/adult, $6/child (13 and under) • 7-9pm • 205 Main St. E, Menomonie

  • June 26 – Mamma Mia!
  • July 31 – Grease
