Snow has finally fallen and stuck in the Chippewa Valley, welcoming 2024 with a drop in temperatures and a blanket of white. The Lakely (516 Galloway St., Eau Claire) also rung in the new year in wintry style – VINTERKOS style!

In Norwegian, “vinter” means winter, and during the season, the word “kos” describes a cozy and warm atmosphere, physically and emotionally. “The concept of VINTERKOS is all about embracing the long cold and dark winter months and using them as a time to enjoy the company of others, create warm and cozy moments, and enjoy simple luxuries,” explained Cassandra Heintz, GF Hotels & Resorts general manager.

The 8-by-14-foot cabin-like structure is fitted with an electric fireplace, blankets galore, and a covered center table with seating for up to six people. Guests are invited to indulge in drinks and food from The Lakely, just feet away. Enclosed in the intimate, 112-square-foot space, VINTERKOS has no age restrictions and is dog-friendly.

While there is no fee to book VINTERKOS, there is a food and beverage minimum purchase requirement of $50 from Tuesday to Thursday and $100 on Friday and Saturday. Plus, if you haven’t swung by The Lakely in a bit, the eatery launched a new expanded menu at the start of January including entrees such as Steak Frites, the ECGC (Eau Claire Grilled Cheese), the Beer + Brat Mac ’N’ Cheese, and more.

Heintz said VINTERKOS has been in the works for several months as discussions were held about creating an outdoor space to enjoy winter in Eau Claire similar to the igloos at the Lismore, the Oxbow’s sister property, albeit with an Oxbow vibe. The idea to curate a cabin-style experience was born.

The Lakely’s patio space will once again be available this spring once weather permits, and VINTERKOS will likely be available November-April annually depending on Wisconsin’s finicky weather.
