The Wisconsin Farmers Union has been busy remodeling a century-old building in downtown Chippewa Falls and construction is in full swing with hopes for a 2024 opening. The three-story, 45,000-square foot building at 128 W. River St. has been dubbed Market on River. The name, along with the building itself, represents the Farmers Union’s members and their mission.

The Market on River recently confirmed that occupants will include Ne-Ne’s Tacos, Captain Coops Trading Co., Wildflour Bakery, and TemptAsians when the project is complete. The Farmers Union is also in talks with an espresso/mocktail vendor, and a barbecue restaurant, and wants to create a fresh market on-site that would provide year-round offerings.

“The goal is to create a unique experience with a variety of menus that will make it a regular stop for people's weekly outings and become an amazing tourist destination.”

“The goal is to create a unique experience with a variety of menus that will make it a regular stop for people’s weekly outings and become an amazing tourist destination,” said Jackie Boos, facilities director for the Farmers Union. “All vendors are members of the Wisconsin Farmers Union and will be committed to purchasing a percentage of local products through our membership.”

With 15,000-square feet on each floor, there’s a lot of space to work with. The Farmers Union plans to dedicate a section of the second floor to their offices, making it the location of their state headquarters.

The Market on River envisions the rest of the second floor to be a versatile space that can host a variety of events including pop-up markets, fundraisers, educational conferences or conventions, meetings, and more. “This area adds to the inventory that the region has and provides a great downtown location for groups to consider,” Boos said. “The second floor has already signed a contract with a hair salon, and we are in talks with several businesses that cater to the 9-5 crowd.”

The third floor of Market on River will have nine apartment units. “There is growing excitement around downtown living,” Boos said. The location will offer views of Riverfront Park and the Chippewa River.

Currently, there are four open spaces for businesses available on the first floor and one space on the second floor. Apartments are also still available. For more information, contact Market on River through their website or Facebook page. Learn more about the Wisconsin Farmers Union online.
