A downtown Eau Claire favorite, 200 Main Art & Wine Gallery, has a new name and a new location – the buildings where Purple Petunia and The Calico Shoppe used to stand at 216 S. Barstow St. Now rebranded as 2 Roots Art & Wine Gallery, the core concept behind the business will remain the same but on a much larger scale with exciting new elements.
Renovations at 2 Roots began a year and a half ago when owner Sean Chambers moved into the adjoining spaces, and it officially opened Friday, Oct. 13. The left side (the former Purple Petunia), holds the main wine shop, kitchen, and balcony seating. With a projector on the balcony, Chambers is hoping to hold wine tastings where attendees can video chat with wineries and vineyards across the country to learn about the wine they’re sampling.
The right side (formerly the Calico Shoppe), will be used more as a wine bar, with several self-serve wine dispensers offering more than 100 wine varieties by the glass. Chamber says the goal is ultimately to have one of the largest “by the glass” wine programs in the country. The wine inventory in the store has also skyrocketed, going from about 500 varieties to roughly 2,000.
Not a wine drinker? Not a problem. There will also be self-serve spirits dispensers with 14 different whiskeys, gins, or tequilas to have by the glass as well as a beer fridge and even a special corner tucked under the stairs that holds an extensive saké collection, also with its own self-serve dispenser.
Chambers is excited about all of the changes and additions the new space will bring, including the kitchen that will be used to offer customizable charcuterie boards. Charcuterie boards won’t be offered right away as the business gets settled into the new space, but be sure to look out for them in the near future.
Of course, just as important as the wine at 2 Roots is the art displayed in the space. The artwork adorning the walls will have a heavy focus on local artists as well as some from the 19th and 20th centuries.
Musicians will still be in the spotlight as well at 2 Roots, as the right side of the building will hold live music and other events about three to four times a week. Information on live music events will be added to their website soon.
“I’m excited to finally be open and to focus on bringing in good wines and hosting more live music and other events,” Chambers said.
