Perhaps you’ve noticed some construction along the western shore of Half Moon Lake. Well, it won’t be there for long: the 1,800-foot-long Half Moon Lake Trail and Boardwalk project is nearing completion.

The concrete portion of the trail is finished and is already receiving positive feedback from the community. “It’s given people in the area a dedicated nature trail for walking and biking,” said Steve Plaza, Eau Claire Parks, Forestry, & Cemetery Manager. “It feels like you’re in a national forest.”

"this project has enhanced the area, allowing people to feel closer to nature."

The boardwalk, made of galvanized steel and wood-grained embossed material, sits over the marsh. “Think of the material like compressed plastic,” Plaza said. “Bugs can’t get to it, and it won’t get moldy.” The peninsula portion of the boardwalk is complete – and is aptly named, Peninsula Boardwalk – with the south loop near the YMCA’s Menard Tennis Center beginning construction on Sept 25. Plaza hopes to have the project finished “before the snow flies.”

The entire trail will connect the YMCA's Menard Tennis Center, at the bottom of the map, to Rod and Gun Park. Carson Park is the wooded peninsula at right. (Submitted map)

While walking on the boardwalk, you may spot some turtles, as the path goes right over their nesting area. Don’t worry, it doesn’t disturb them. The turtles and other woodland creatures can travel freely underneath the boardwalk. You may also stumble across other wildlife like birds and deer.

“I’m very excited to have this done,” Plaza said. “This project has enhanced the area, allowing people to feel closer to nature.”

If you haven’t already, put on your fall jacket and check it out for yourself!
