“Indian Lake House Ruins” by Kay Brathol-Hostvet

Kay Brathol-Hostvet is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America with a BFA from UW-Stout. Her work is in corporate and private collections around the Midwest and been featured in The Pastel Journal, Green Lake Magazine, Dane Arts Poster and Calendar, and North Light Books, AcrylicWorks 2. In addition to being an exhibiting artist, she teaches workshops in drawing, design, pastel, and acrylic painting. She works from her studio in Eau Claire and is represented by Riverwood Art and Frame in Eau Claire; Abel Contemporary Gallery in Stoughton, Wisconsin; and Edgewood Orchard Galleries in Fish Creek, Wisconsin.

“Indian Lake House Ruins” (2020) • Soft pastel on sanded paper mounted to panel •  From the artist: “My work has been described as Contemporary Regionalism – a celebration of the land, but with a modern aesthetic. I’m particularly interested in the concept of quiet anticipation – an expectant stillness that one feels at certain times of day. This work was created for the show, ‘Constructed Landscape,’ and depicts the ruins of a limestone farmhouse, now located within the boundaries of Indian Lake County Park, near Cross Plains, Wisconsin.

I work from a combination of sources: my own photographs taken on journeys into the countryside, notes that I take on location, and design studies. The photos act as a catalyst and reminder of form. While my paintings may look photorealistic, they are carefully designed with intention to capture that transient moment.”
