Here in the Valley, we love to spotlight outstanding locals, and this kiddo is on his way to becoming a local celebrity. AJ, a five-year-old from Altoona, is making waves as a Target model in stores all over the nation.

While speaking to his mother, Sandi, it’s impossible not to notice the pride she holds for her amazing son. And once you see his pictures, you’ll understand why.

How does a 5-year-old like AJ land a modeling gig?

It came down to pure chance and a quick idea from a medical professional, says Sandi. (We’re omitting her last name to protect the family’s privacy.) AJ was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, something that makes doctor’s appointments relatively common for him and his family. While at one of his appointments, Sandi was given the idea to put AJ into modeling by one of his nurse practitioners.

It was a perfect suggestion, since AJ loves to smile. “He’s constantly laughing and smiling,” Sandi shared with a chuckle. “So I (sent in pictures) just for fun one day, and then we started to get calls.”

With modeling agencies and businesses striving to be more inclusive, Sandi saw the importance of AJ’s chance to be a model.

After modeling gigs with JCPenney Portrait Studios and Alphabet U, Sandi was shocked to find out that AJ had been invited to a Target casting call. Spoiler alert: The call went well, and AJ got booked!

But the good news didn’t stop there. “It wasn’t until after (AJ) took the pictures that they were like, ‘This is for store marketing,’” she explained. “And I said, ‘Wait – he’s going to be in the store?’”

And one day, in the Target toddler section, Sandi found her son’s picture staring back at her, mid-laugh, just how she knows him best. Once she posted a snapshot on Facebook, she discovered his face was showing up everywhere. “We started getting families saying that AJ was spotted in Indiana, in Long Island, Virginia, Washington, California!” The list goes on.

With a kid as special as AJ, it’s been incredible to see the impact he has on other children, especially those similar to him. “AJ always notices kids that look like him,” Sandi said. “And we wanted other kids to do the same with him and his picture, and feel seen.”

There’s lots going for AJ, and so many good things on the horizon. But mostly, his mother has one wish for her son. “I just hope he keeps his joy,” she said. “Inclusivity comes with that, and I wish that for all kids. Everyone belongs!”
