UW-Eau Claire is tagged as a campus that fosters undergraduate research and it is with great excitement that it will be hosting the National Conference on Undergraduate Research from April 13-15. This prestigious event promotes scholarship across all disciplines and showcases thousands of research presentations.

Over the course of 2½ days, the campus will be the nation’s epicenter of creative and scientific exploration as 4,000 students and faculty members will come to UWEC. Rooms will be filled to capacity with posters, and the halls will echo with the sounds of students presenting their findings. For all who are able to attend, this is an opportunity to be immersed in “the celebration of research,” said Karen Morris, a lead for the conference.

UWEC added its flair when creating alternative presentation platforms for projects that don’t fit the more traditional mold, such as live performances of music and prose submissions, visual arts displayed in the Foster Gallery, and three murals that will be painted on campus by participating students over the course of the conference.

I don’t think we realize that research is not just STEM, but research can be in any area. The fact that we have this creative art aspect to it – I think will really show people that research is everywhere – the lab is anywhere.

“I don’t think we realize that research is not just STEM, but research can be in any area,” Morris said. “The fact that we have this creative art aspect to it – I think will really show people that research is everywhere – the lab is anywhere.”

When students aren’t presenting, they can attend sessions where key speakers will discuss matters ranging from imposter syndrome to sustainability, or they can spend time networking with more than 150 graduate schools and employers to explore their next steps.

And get ready for a downtown takeover, as students attending the conference will be “Crossing the Bridge” into the Eau Claire community on Friday, April 14. That evening will be lively with music, open mics, street performances, and people from across the nation experiencing an authentic Wisconsin cheese curd. All NCUR events can be attended by presenting students, accompanying faculty, and volunteers. If you are interested in attending a speaker session or simply perusing the poster boards, NCUR is still taking applications for volunteers at ncur23uwec.volunteerlocal.com.
