GO OFF (THE GRID)! Local David Welder released his debut book about livin' off the grid and even has a rentable rustic cabin for a taste of that lifestyle.

David Welder was an environmental engineer for 35 years, fighting the good fight for Earth. He has also been an artist, photographer, and now author! His debut book Forth to Basics: A Guide to Goin’ Off-Grid (And Living More With Less) is a how-to for those wishing to save money and change their lifestyle to one they believe would be more beneficial by reconnecting with nature.

“(Living off-grid) is minimalistic and that’s why I call it a retro-revolutionary lifestyle. It’s like how we used to live only with some modern things,” said Welder. Going off-grid doesn’t mean you have to give up internet or television. “So, you get the best of both worlds. And in return for all that work, you get more peace of mind (and) security.”

Welder and his wife have lived in a rustic cabin for ten years, producing their own power through solar, using an outhouse so they don’t have to pay for plumbing, and all manner of other money-saving, simplistic ways of living in the boonies of Osseo, Wisconsin. Welder was inspired to write his DIY guidebook when so many young couples asked questions while staying in their Airbnb cabin right next to Welder’s.

“For those that are looking to do this, I hope to give them some shortcuts,” said Welder. “I also want to just show people that it can be done.”

Out and available since November 22, 2022, Forth to Basics is an instructional guide with lots of visuals to aid the descriptions, all of it meshed with Welder’s wholesome, fun humor. He covers anything one could think of when debating moving from suburban/city life to a rustic style of chopping firewood for fuel. From the essentials to food prep to the health and financial benefits to planning and executing a cabin creation with concise explanations, Welder’s book has it all.

“I hope to provide some common sense and some hope and some frugal solutions,” said Welder. This book is a perfect starter packet for those wishing to save money, become closer to nature, and provide some aid to protecting the environment.
