California Tacos has been a favorite on the Chippewa Valley food truck scene for a few years, and has now moved from its signature blue truck parked off of Brackett Avenue into its first storefront at 628 Water St.

Now open for carry-out at its new location – what was once home to Water St. Deli & Grocery – foodie fans of California Tacos are anxiously awaiting indoor eating to become available. having opened up for carry-out on Jan. 2, the family-owned eatery is planning on moving in tables and seating options soon.

For now, the go-to for Birria tacos, ramen, quesadillas, and tortas is open Tuesday-Thursday from 11am-8pm, Friday-Saturday from 11am-9pm, and Sundays from 11am-6pm. They are hoping to be open on Mondays in the near future.

The family of Noe and Rosina Velasquez began operating California Tacos back in 2019 primarily out of Whitehall and Arcadia before becoming a well-known authentic Mexican food truck frequently parked off of Brackett Avenue in Eau Claire. Now, the food truck-turned-storefront has more than 4,000 followers on Facebook, 60+ reviews, and a perfect 5.0-star rating.

The eatery shared its new menu for the year online: The 10-item menu consists of burritos, street tacos, sopas, asada fries, and more alongside its four-item Birria category. Birria has recently entered the mainstream spotlight in the area, the flavorful consommé and braising liquid drenching shredded birria meat and served up in a variety of ways. One of California Tacos’ most unique and popular dishes is its Birria Ramen.

Prices range from about $3-$12, though some of Birria dishes cost a few bucks more (including the Birria Tacos, which consists of four loaded tacos). Word on the street (and in the EC Foodies Facebook group) is that they’re worth every penny, especially once you see the serving sizes and taste the made-fresh, authentic grub.
