Most Water Street bars have big signs, DJs, pop music, and lines out front, but one is different: a quiet hole in the wall with stained glass windows, a jukebox, and chessboards that seems content with hiding in plain sight. The Joynt – Eau Claire’s half bar half time machine – recently placed second in a March Madness-style online “Tournament of the Taverns” organized by the Twitter account Dives of Wisconsin (@DivesOfWI). When all the votes and quote tweets were tallied, Nick’s on Second in Platteville won. While this may seem like a defeat, some are content avoiding the limelight. Less recognition means more open bar stools for the regulars. Maybe The Joynt is better left to those who believe they’ll appreciate it more.
