UW-Stout is about to become a whole lot prettier. A new, student-designed, 40-foot mural will be painted on the university’s Applied Arts Building in the near future.

Four students – Jack Gilbert, Bree Marconnet, Amelia Moschkau, and Tommy Slane – created the design in their Digital Illustration course taught by Erik Evenson.

“From the first day of the semester, Amelia, Bree, Jack, and Tommy showed a strong collaborative spirit,” Evensen said. “Not only did they generate strong ideas early on, but their willingness to revise, adapt, and integrate class feedback helped them define a collective creative direction, which is why this project is as powerful as it is.”

The final design is a lively representation of all of the art majors offered at UW-Stout including music, photography, digital design, pottery, and much more. The design was approved on March 24 and students will begin painting in late May.

The team created their design based on individual sketches that they all created to reflect the different art majors and creating a unique Stout-esque color scheme.

“Everything fell into place naturally because we were all able to work toward our strengths,” Slane said. “I am very excited to see this project permanently installed on campus because most of the work I do does not leave my screen, and I'm proud to be a part of representing all of the amazing work that comes out of Stout.”

The idea to create the mural came from UW-Stout’s Art and Art History department chairperson, Cynthia Bland, who taught in Scotland in the summer of 2019 and fell in love with the murals around the Edinburgh and Glasgow. Bland then brought in Dave Beck, interim associate provost for Partner and Student Engagement, and UW-Stout alum Wade Lambrigtsen, who owns Vintage Sign Shop in Menomonie and specializes in murals.

This mural is a true community effort and is sure to be a cultural and artistic hub for all students on campus now and for the many more to come.
