“Temperance River, North Shore” by Maureen Skroski

Maureen Skroski is a pastel artist from Wisconsin. After retiring from teaching art in Eau Claire, she has had more time to focus on her own art.

“Temperance River, North Shore” (2018), soft pastel, 18”x12”  • From the artist: “Pastels are pure powdered pigment and a binder. The medium offers a painterly quality and intense colors. I am drawn to these qualities. I paint Plein Air and from photos. ‘Temperance River’ was inspired from a photo taken by Charles Kersten, owner of Riverwood Art and Frame in Eau Claire. When painting with pastels I use sanded paper, which holds the pastels and allows for layering. I start with a rough sketch and an under painting using an alcohol wash. Dry layers are applied darks to lights. Local colors are interpreted loosely and exaggerated. Sometimes I surprise myself with my color choices. I am still learning and my style and skills are always evolving.”

Volume One finds its cover art in a number of ways, from local art shows to random emails to knowing someone who knows someone who knows a great artist. The art always originates from a current or former Chippewa Valley resident. If you'd like to submit cover art, send us a message.
