An eclectic short film from Minneapolis-based, Eau Claire native filmmaker Mack Hastings is sure to leave audiences deeply unsettled – yet sore with laughter.

The Getaway, which was shot last year in Eau Claire with full COVID-19 precautions, is a striking blend of suspense, hilarity, and keen social commentary that culminates in an unforgettable twist.

“I would describe it as a horror comedy,” Hastings said. “An influencer couple rents an Airbnb to get out of the city and… hijinks ensue.”

The film stars Eau Claire’s very own Collin Sinz, Elise Wattman, and Josh Ingersoll, and features a score written by local musician Hunter Nicholson.

I Hope people enjoy the movie and go in with an open mindset.

I am really happy I have great friends who are really talented and help me make my movies. Well, our movies.

Hastings said he wrote the film specifically for Sinz, whom he met while doing high school improv. After seeing some “hilarious” front-facing videos Sinz posted on Facebook, Hastings said he knew he wanted to work with him.

“I thought (we should do) something where we could have him do those front-facing selfie videos, (which) would really utilize his skillset well,” Hastings said. “From there, I came up with the idea of an influencer.”

With the help of Josh Ingersoll – who plays the film’s most unforgettable role – Hastings fleshed out the story and got writing.   The final product, which features familiar Eau Claire scenery such as Lake Altoona and the Third Ward and East Hill neighborhoods, premiered at a house show in July alongside films from Eau Claire creatives Tim Schwagel and Gabbie Henn.

Before premiering the film online, Hastings plans to do more screenings of the film during the Halloween season “to get people in the Halloween spirit,” he said.

“I hope people enjoy the movie and go in with an open mindset,” Hastings said. “I am really happy I have great friends who are really talented and help me make my movies. Well, our movies.”
