Behind the Screens: E.C. Native Wins Daytime Emmy
Justin Johnson’s YouTube-based series exploring Netflix’s cinematography techniques wins prestigious award
An Eau Claire native recently won an Emmy for his YouTube-based series that breaks down the complex techniques that Netflix uses to create its world-renowned films.
Justin Johnson and his production company, Big Machine Productions, recently won the daytime Emmy for Outstanding Arts and Pop Culture Program for his show, “Behind the FX.” “Behind the FX” focuses on the special effects that media streaming service Netflix uses to create its original movies, analyzing cinematography and effect techniques to explore methods used to make each film.
“Our work with Netflix started shortly before the pandemic began,” Johnson said. “From the start of our partnership with Netflix, we knew that we wanted to create the ‘Behind the FX.’ We wanted the opportunity to showcase how Netflix – with their impressive resources – created some of the most impressive scenes in their different films.”
“Behind the FX” is just one of many notable projects that Big Machine Productions has worked on since its inception in 2012, as the national production company has worked with notable clients such as General Mills and Wired. The company’s focus is to create high-quality advertisements and content that can be enjoyed by both advertisers and consumers.
Going forward, Johnson said he hopes to see Big Machine Productions expand and get more involved with projects that allow his team to be on physical sets.
