“La Luna” by Joseph Velasquez

Joseph Velasquez is an artist who uses popular culture and social issues to create compelling and unique narratives.

“La Luna” (carved woodblock print on paper, 2016) • “This image was created as part of an ongoing suite re-imagining the popular Latin children’s game, Loteria. This game is often called Mexican Bingo and uses numbers, words and images to teach children. My grandmother used the game to help teach me Spanish. The images were dated and did not have a cultural connection, so my grandmother had me draw my own images to captivate my interest and expand my vocabulary. Now, I have revisited these drawings to reimagine the images and to recontextualize their meanings to reach a broader context and social relevance.”
