It may not be easy being green, but at least being green could get you some recognition from the City of Eau Claire’s Sustainable Advisory Committee. For the fifth consecutive year, the committee is sponsoring the Sustainable Eau Claire Awards, which “recognize individuals, businesses, and organizations that are committed to creating a more sustainable Eau Claire.” This year, the committee says, there will be a “special emphasis on those reducing greenhouse gas emissions.” Possible categories include:

  • Clean-up or Beautification
  • Energy: Renewables, Efficiency or Conservation
  • Environmental Education
  • Exceptional Natural Resources Steward
  • Green Building Design
  • Green Products or Practices
  • Local, Sustainable, Healthy Food
  • Transportation Innovations
  • Waste Reduction, Composting or Recycling
  • Water Quality or Water Conservation
  • Student Leadership in Sustainability

Last year’s winners include Eau Claire Energy Cooperative, UW-Eau Claire’s Watershed Institute, the Pablo Center at the Confluence, Eco Urban Timber, Tree Purpose of Eau Claire, Eau Claire Citizens’ Climate Lobby, and the Eau Claire Downtown Farmers Market.

According to a media release, “The awards are meant to also encourage residents, businesses, community groups, and others to implement similar actions.”Applications are due by Thursday, Oct. 15, and the application form can be found at the Sustainable Eau Claire Awards website.
