“Chemo vs Creativity I” (2019), acrylic, stencil, ink, pencil, and marker, 20” x 20” by Patricia Hamm

Patricia Hamm, a longtime area artist, exhibits often at local venues. Her abstract artwork hangs in many locations and homes around the area. She has been a popular workshop instructor.

“This is one of three paintings that represent my struggle with cancer. I was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer in 2017. The worst part of the chemo was that it interfered with my creativity, and being a full-time artist, it the worst thing that can happen.

“I feel that I am lost without my creativity. At first I didn’t even want to go to my studio, but finally did, and I’d try to paint, and everything looked horrible. I kept trying.

“After many months I finally started on one that was working. As you can see the lower left has a darker tone, and I see that as my cancer. I kept trying, working farther into the circle, the shapes began to become light and happier. I emerged with this, the first painting in the series. They all hang at the Pablo Center in the Laurie Bieze Gallery.”
