Of more than 500 short films submitted to the Chippewa Valley Film Festival, only 17 were chosen to be shown at the Micon Downtown Budget Cinema on Saturday, April 27.

The fourth annual Chippewa Valley Film Festival will be divided into two sections, each an hour long. The first section will showcase the talent of local and regional filmmakers. After an intermission, the remaining eight videos will be creations from international filmmakers and videographers. After each section, there will be a question-and-answer session where the audience can comment and ask questions of the filmmakers in attendance.

Because the CVFF being the only local festival to offer a variety of both regional and international short films – entries may be no more than 20 minutes long – the audience will be in for a unique experience. Anyone who enjoys short films is sure to find a genre of their liking this year: drama, comedy, narrative, documentary, animated, and experimental.

Mitchell Spencer, one of the festival’s organizers, is hopeful for another large turnout: The festival has sold out in two of the last three years. The Chippewa Valley Film Festival is continuing its growth and outreach with the help of a Cultural Arts Grant from Visit Eau Claire. The festival is committed to promoting, educating, and providing artistic short films for the community. It is also hopeful for a continuation of audience education and involvement by giving the opportunity to interact with filmmakers during the festival.

Supporting downtown Eau Claire is also important for the festival’s organizers because it gives the audience an opportunity to connect with other venues in the area. Over the last four years, the festival has chosen about 80 filmmakers to debut original creations.
