‘Spotlight’ Kicks Off Journalism Film Series

Tom Giffey |

An upcoming film series at UW-Eau Claire will explore how journalism works (or doesn’t work) in covering poverty and other challenges in society.

“Building Trust: Journalism at the Movies Film Series and Discussion” will run three consecutive Mondays – Oct. 8, 15, and 22 – at the Woodland Theater inside Davies Center on the UWEC campus.

Doors will open at 6pm, and films will begin at 6:30. The series starts Oct. 8 with Spotlight, which won the 2015 Academy Award for Best Picture. Spotlight – which stars Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Liv Schreiber, and Rachel McAdams – tells the true story of the Boston Globe investigative reporting team that uncovered the widespread and hidden sexual abuse of children by Catholic priests.

The Oct. 15 feature will be The Florida Project, a 2017 drama about a single mother and her 6-year-old daughter who live in a motel in the shadows of Disney World, while on Oct. 22 the film will be Poor Kids, a PBS “Frontline” special that explores how poverty impacts children and families.

The series, which is sponsored by the UWEC student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, is part of the Beyond the Headlines Eau Claire project, an ongoing series of events focusing on coverage of poverty issues in Eau Claire. Learn more at beyondtheheadlineswisconsin.org/eau-claire.
