“Oakland #1” by Rebecca Crowell
Oil/cold wax medium on paper, 8” x 6”

Rebecca Crowell exhibits her abstract paintings in galleries in the U.S. and internationally, and is the co-author of Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts & Conversations (Squeegee Press, 2016).

“Oakland #1 is a small abstract oil painting, done during a workshop I taught in California last fall. In quick paintings like this I play freely with color and composition. I like to think this one evokes a feeling of the Bay Area on a bright November day. Most of my work, though, is much larger and developed over time. Layers of oil paint mixed with cold wax medium are built up in layers, creating intricate surfaces. I work from memories of rugged and remote places that I’ve experienced, including the western coast of Ireland, northern Sweden, New Zealand, and New Mexico (where my husband, Don Ticknor, and I spend winters).
