Here in Eau Claire, we have the unique opportunity to watch ten of the world’s best chainsaw carvers compete this summer. Carson Park will again be hosting the U.S. Open Chainsaw Sculpture Championship on August 10-13. Competitors are coming to town to compete in all their sawdusty glory from around the United States, from Germany, Japan, and even Australia. Artists will turn simple logs into intricate works of art, using only their chainsaws. Thursday, August 10 is slated to be free admissions day, thanks to sponsorship by Charter Bank. Thursday will offer competition carving, guest carving, inflatable rides, and family activities. For the rest of the weekend, prices are very reasonable, starting at $5 for a one day pass and maxing out at $12 for weekend event pass. You can even find discounted early bird tickets at Gordy’s Market or Mega Holiday. The days will consist of all day competition, followed by an auction of the sculptures. The competition is broken up into two parts; competitors on Thursday and Friday will make sculptures related to wildlife, while Saturday and Sunday will allow the carvers to create whatever art they choose. Because this is the U.S. Open Championship, it is safe to assume that these carvings will be nothing short of spectacular. To close out the competition there will be an award ceremony with a performance by the Sue Orfield Band. Mark your calendars because this is a great excuse to get out and enjoy the beautiful Carson Park, and witness some world class art in the making.
