Prolific author and Eau Claire native John Coy has been honored by the Wisconsin Library Association for his latest children’s book, Game Changer: John McLendon and the Secret Game. Last month, the WLA gave the book the 2016 Elizabeth Burr/Worzalla Award, which is presented annually “to the most distinguished work in literature written and/or illustrated by a Wisconsin book creator.” The book tells the real-life story of a secret basketball game between an all-white team from the Duke University Medical School and an all-black team from the North Carolina College of Negroes, coached by future hall-of-famer John McLendon. The game was played in 1944, when racial segregation made such a contest not only unheard of but also illegal. Coy, who grew up in Eau Claire and now lives in Minnesota, is the author of more than a dozen books for young people, most of them sports-related.
