Augusta Bakery Nabs Big Award

Darrion Behrendt |

Out of four nominees, Augusta Bakery stood alone as the winner of Wisconsin’s 2016 Bakery Operation of the Year award. Augusta Bakery, a bakery in – you guessed it – Augusta, won over the judges for the annual competition. The bakery also won four categorical awards at the Midwest Foodservice Expo on the same day. Their weapons of choice? Caramel apple fritters, peanut butter cup long johns, donut holes, and savory long johns. The nomination-based award is given to Wisconsin Bakers Association members that not only meet WBA standards, but go above and beyond them. Bakeries must have already won a bakery of the month award as well as other qualifiers like non-monetary contributions to the WBA and bakery industries and of course, having that special something that makes them stand out amongst the rest. Owners Natalya and Robert Chaffee aren’t feeling the effects of their success just yet. “For us it’s just the next day of work ... it hasn’t set in yet,” says Natalya. Their secret to success as a small town bakery? “Baking things the way they’re supposed to be baked,” she said. ”It’s the real deal, people can taste the difference.”
