Man of Myth
locally made musical expands on beloved Robyn Hood tales
Take from the rich and give to the poor? That’s what the original Robin Hood always said.
This fall, however, Scene and Hurd Productions is putting a whole new twist on a timeless classic in its hilarious premiere staging of Robyn Hood and the Grey-Cloaked Stranger. The show will run at the State Theatre during the first full weekend of November.
In this hysterical comedy-musical adaptation of a well-known literature tradition, Robyn Hood of Sherwood Forest faces the threat of death through his valiant attempts to outwit the sly Sir Guy of Gisbourne. Add a grey-cloaked stranger to the mix, and things become even trickier for the heroic outlaw.
“Audiences can expect fun and mystery,” said director Karen Hurd. “We’ve got dancing, music, sword-play, and characters people know and love with a few new ones, too!”
Scene and Hurd Productions is a musical theater company that seeks to bring high-quality entertainment through adventure-packed plots, witty dialogue, and engaging musical selections that the whole family will enjoy. The mastermind responsible for this Fall Creek-based group is none other than Hurd, a longtime author and composer. In an effort to cater to her passion for the performing arts, forming a group dedicated to plays, dramas, comedies, and musicals was a natural progression.
“Our main difference from other theater groups is that we only put on original works,” explained Hurd. “You’ll always see something new at one of our shows – always a premiere! Additionally, we have a strong stage combat program. At almost every show you’ll see fight choreography, which is totally unique.”
From the local church to the State Theatre, the Scene and Hurd Productions has made tremendous leaps and bounds since its debut in 2000. Through it all, one mission has remained fundamental from start to finish: for every member of the community to have the opportunity to get involved in theater.
“We always welcome anyone and everyone,” Hurd said. “Because our shows are original, we can write in parts for you if none exist. If you audition for a show, you’re in! To join, simply come to one of our auditions!”
