Big Hero 6, the first featured film of Summer Cinema 2015

Summer is just around the corner and you know what that means; it’s time to stop freezing our bums off and take part in our favorite summer activities. Going to the beach, playing a little disc golf, enjoying a picnic with the family, or maybe watching a movie. Don’t think watching a movie is a summer activity? It is when the big screen is outside.

Summer Cinema is returning to Wednesday nights with a great line up of movies and plenty of fun events to boot. Every week, the big screen will be set up in the lawn west of the Haas Fine Arts Center on campus. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy one of the great flicks that will be playing. Films include family friendly movies such as Big Hero 6 and The Sandlot, along with dramas like The Theory of Everything, which was nominated at last year’s Academy Awards for Best Picture.

... And there’s no charge.

A movie isn’t the only thing Summer Cinema has to offer. Each week will feature a different theme based on the movie playing. Prior to starting up the reel at 9pm, activities will take place centered on these themes. For example, Big Hero 6 falls on “Superhero Night” will feature a costume contest for kids. Bring the little ones along and let them dress up as their favorite superhero.

When The Sandlot plays on July 1, Summer Cinema will bring all the baseball equipment necessary for a ballgame. Enjoy a game of baseball before watching this classic movie.

There are plenty of other activities to take part in each week. Enormous versions on your favorite games like Jumbo Jenga, Giant Connect 4, and Oversized Kerplunk will be set up. You can get free popcorn and beverages but if that’s not quite enough, your favorite foods will be available for purchase from local vendors.
