Funding for a long-awaited upgrade of one of UW-Eau Claire’s nearly 50-year-old dorms has moved a step closer to reality. On March 24, the Wisconsin State Building Commission approved a recommendation from the UW System to spend $33 million to renovate the 1967-vintage Towers Residence Hall on upper campus. The 2015-17 state budget, which would include the money, still must be approved by the state Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee and signed into law by Gov. Scott Walker. Funds would come from student residence hall fees, not from taxes or tuition. The remodeling would impact both of Towers’ 10-story towers, and would include building new common areas; upgrading rooms, hallways, bathrooms, and the HVAC system; adding new elevators; and replacing windows and exterior bricks. According to a UWEC press release, the renovations will reduce the hall’s occupancy from 1,287 beds to 1,092 beds. Towers is known both for its dual silhouette in the campus skyline and for serving as fodder for a track that shares its name on Bon Iver’s Grammy-winning second album, Bon Iver, Bon Iver.
