Ian Alexy Amid The Plus's First Ever Music Residency

Steve Freuhauf |

Even though he just recently relocated to the Chippewa Valley, former Minneapolis singer/songwriter/producer Ian Alexy is already making waves in the community’s busy music scene. In tandem with The Plus, 208 S. Barstow St., he is performing the first residency the pizza joint has ever attempted. In other words, Alexy will be a recurring act each Wednesday from Jan. 7 to 28. He has already done two nights of his six-night residency. The bluesy folk artist studied jazz harmony at Berklee College of Music in Boston for a year in the 1990s and then transferred to Goddard University in Vermont. He has studied guitar and drumming in Ghana and tried his hand at being a major player in the Burlington, Vt., music scene since graduating from college. More recently, Alexy moved to the Midwest where he has spent considerable time in Minneapolis and Duluth, Minn. -- two independent music hotspots. In addition to performing each Wednesday, Alexy is planning on bringing special guests who he’s performed with in the past to add some variety to the type of music being played. Ryan Young, member of Duluth-hatched Trampled By Turtles, will be at the next show Jan. 7. Along with that, Alexy will perform as Ian Alexy and The Deserters on Jan. 14; with Hobo Nephews on Jan. 21; and with Gabe Douglas, a member of the group The 4 on the Floor, on Jan. 28. All performances are free.
