Web Series Gets Couch Potatoes Ready for Deer Hunting

Mike Seitz |

Deer hunting season is upon us and as folks get ready to head into the woods, most are thinking more about bagging that 30-point buck than about the strain the unusual physical activity will put on their couch-bound bodies. Marshfield Clinic wants to change that with a series of online videos to educate hunters about how to stay safe and healthy during deer season. The series, titled “Couch to Deer Camp,” covers a wide variety of topics, including heart attack symptoms, helpful exercises, and healthy snacks.

While deer hunting isn’t always a physically rigorous activity, it doesn’t normally take place near a hospital, either. Hunters may still be at risk for heart trouble with the increase in activity. One video features a health assessment and a guide to the symptoms of a heart attack and questions to ask your doctor about whether or not you’re fit enough to join the blaze-orange battalion.

Also included are some basic exercises that will get you ready for hunting season, all demonstrated by a typical-looking middle-aged, Midwestern male. (No models here.) Some of the exercises – ironically enough – even involve leaning on the couch, so you won’t have to go far to work out. The series recommends that hunters walk daily for at least 30 minutes since hunting often involves a lot or walking. By adding a few other activities, such as “high knees,” the exercise will benefit your health as well as your hunt, preparing you to traverse the rough terrain where Bambi’s family resides.

Bagging the buck that will make your coworkers jealous is a worthwhile endeavor, but the topics brought up in Marshfield Clinic’s series should be considered before you pack for deer camp. By visiting the  website, you can ready yourself for the hunt and possibly make it more successful. Marshfield Clinic is posting more videos and information leading up to the Nov. 22 season opener, so be sure to check back often.
