The suffix “rama,” seen in words such as diorama and panorama, means a “spectacular display or instance of” whatever noun precedes it. So it shouldn’t be surprising that the aptly named Menomonie Airfest and Autorama has a schedule chock full of ridiculous rides, stellar shows, and fun for the whole family. This festival starts the morning right on both days as pilots and drivers arrive in their vehicles of choice for a pancake breakfast. After checking out some Mustangs in honor of the iconic car’s 50th anniversary, children can either go play in the Kids Corral or the whole family can hop on a helicopter or airplane for one of the rides that will be offered throughout the day. For the brave-of-heart, the Adventure Obstacle Course Race (of the “Tough Mudder” variety) is a trek that you can take on with a team of up to five people or by yourself. The race takes competitors (literally) over the river and through the woods on a course with more than 20 obstacles. Festival-goers can also witness an air shows on Saturday and Sunday featuring some of the best pilots in the region. The event will also serve as a memorial: A balloon release is planned to honor Menomonie pilot Bill Cowden, who died in a June 1 crash at an air show in Stevens Point.
