Eau Claire residents decided April 1 that they didn’t want a change at the top: City voters gave City Council President Kerry Kincaid a lopsided victory over challenger Monica Lewis. According to preliminary totals, Kincaid defeated Lewis, a first-term councilwoman, 7,536 votes to 5,449, according to preliminary totals. The race was overshadowed – and shaped – by the two referendums pertaining to the Confluence Project: Kincaid was a strong supporter of the proposal, while Lewis voted against the city’s $5 million pledge toward the planned performing arts center. On election night, Kincaid said she was pleased by the support voters gave to the Confluence via both city and council referendums. “There is work left to be done, but now it looks like we have affirmation to get down to that work,” she told WEAU-TV. It will be a third term for Kincaid: She was first elected council president in 2009 and re-elected in 2012, although this is the first time she faced an opponent.
