Talking In (Lots of) Tongues

Allison Puestow |

Admit it, how many of you – besides the hordes of creative writing majors at UW-Eau Claire – actually read poetry? It’s some scary form of writing that your high school English teacher made you dissect and wring out every possible meaning of, right? Well, just let UWEC’s English Festival reinvent your idea of poetry with the eighth annual International Poetry Reading. As an art form, poetry showcases the beauty of language and the emotional power it can create in us. And since it is an international reading, we can feel that power in multiple ways. Last year, poems were read in 42 different languages! (And if you’re not fluent in all 42 dialects, don’t worry: A booklet containing English translations of the poems will be distributed at the event.) The International Poetry Reading will be 7-9pm Wednesday, April 2, in the Ojibwe Grand Ballroom at UWEC’s Davies Center. For more information, contact Professor Audrey Fessler at fessleaa@uwec.edu.
