Edible Book Fest Seeks Appetizing Literary Fare

Tom Giffey |

Ever read a story that was good enough to eat? The first-ever Clearwater Edible Book Festival at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library invites patrons to (literally) cook up something inspired by a book and to bring in their creations on Saturday, Feb. 15. Entries will be accepted as long as they’re edible and have a literary theme. If you take a gander at Google you’ll find that participants at similar fests nationwide have taken a variety of approaches, including elaborate frosted book-cover cakes (Twilight complete with a real apple); literal interpretations (Pudd’nhead Wilson made of – what else? – pudding); and groan-worthy puns (Quiche of the Spider Woman, A Million Little Reese’s). While entries must be primarily edible, they won’t actually be consumed, so don’t worry about taste. They’ll be judged on visual appeal by Inga Witscher of Wisconsin Public TV’s Around the Farm Table and YouTube chef Joe Luginbill. Entries must be delivered to the library’s lower-level entrance between 8:30 and 10am on Feb. 15. Public viewing will be between 10am and noon, with awards at 12:30pm. Check out ecpubliclibrary.info or call (715) 839-5004 for more information. Pre-registration is required by Feb. 8, so start seeking literary (and culinary) inspiration.
