Stolen Sculpture Reward Boosted to $2,000
At the end of May some disreputable person or persons pilfered a bronze statue, Mother and Child, that was part of Sculpture Tour Eau Claire’s annual outdoor display. Now it’s up to some of us reputable folks to come forward with information to help authorities recover the missing work of art. And if righting a wrong isn’t enough incentive, Sculpture Tour Eau Claire has announced that the reward for information leading to the recovery of the likeness of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus has been boosted from $1,000 to $2,000. The 40-pound, 21-inch sculpture was stolen during the wee hours of May 25 from under the nose of a surveillance camera in front of Stella Blues, 306 E. Madison St. In a press release, Sculpture Tour board member James Hanke said the theft of the $11,000 sculpture has endangered the future of the tour because artists may question the community’s reputation and be reluctant to loan their works for display here. “We have been advised by our local police department and are working with them on helping to trigger someone in our community to do the right thing by giving us any kind of information that may help with the recovery of the sculpture,” Hanke said. If you’ve got such information, you can call the Eau Claire Police Department Tipster Line at 715-839-4982 or send a text to TIP411 (847411) with “ECPD” at the beginning of the message. (Tipsters can remain anonymous.) You can also drop off tips – or the sculpture itself – at the Eau Claire Community Foundation, 306 S. Barstow St., Suite 104.
