2012 Year in Review: Wind Storm Devestates

V1 Staff |

MAY 24 • Eau Claire’s skyline was swiftly altered when a late afternoon windstorm blew through town, toppling thousands of trees. Fortunately the storm caused no injuries, but debris littered numerous neighborhoods, particularly those on the north side. Limbs and trunks crashed through roofs, and a radio tower owned by Clear Channel Communications on Cameron Street tumbled. Some of the worst damage was on public property: The city estimates that about 2,650 trees were lost on public property alone, many of them in Carson Park and nearby Rod & Gun Park. Scores of trees were lost in Lakeview Cemetery as well, and a flash mob soon gathered to clear debris before Memorial Day. All total, the city spent about $250,000 on cleanup.
