The Banff Mountain Film Festival, a long running Canadian festival chronicling outstanding adventures and exploration of mountains is coming to the State Theater on Nov. 20 at 7pm. Since 1976, this festival has featured a compilation of films from around the world during a nine day festival that takes place every year in Banff, Canada.  The selected films the festival’s committee chooses are shown to the public at the Banff Centre before the festival tours beyond the Canadian border. The festival also includes speakers, books, and photographs from around the world that are featured during the initial event in Banff. The festival is an international, competitive event that awards over $50,000 in prizes. A committee narrows down over 300 film entries to over 50 finalists. The selected films are then viewed by an international film jury and then shown the public during the initial festival in Banff. Some titles from the festival include: Crossing the Ice which won the Grand Prize and the prize for Best Film and Exploration and Adventure, Nomadic Nights which won Best Film- Mountain Culture. There are also prizes awarded for Best Short Mountain Film, People’s Choice Award (again it’s Crossing the Ice), a scholarship awarded and an award for creative excellence, as well as special jury mentions. The Banff Centre website also has information about each film, as well as the finalists from the book and photography competitions. The festival runs from 7-9pm, and tickets are $10.
